FOX HAT

Wiley is back, this time he decided he wanted to make a Bodyrox sounding British club track because nobody cares about grime anymore. I like it.

This video is amusing for a few reasons, including the following:

1. looks like most of the budget went to manufacture fox masks
2. toyota corollas
3. amusing to see people other than myself eat trash
4. i can imagine some of these scenes enacted in my alley

Michael Genovese
“We All We Got…”
Packer-Schopf Gallery
Layers of neon pink and green paper painted with bold letters are plastered over
the gallery wall like flyers that accumulate on urban buildings or discount signs at
grocery stores. These attention-grabbing colors, created from unmixed sign paint, draw
the viewer to concise yet open-ended, multilingual thoughts about society. Zora Neale
Hurston’s observation, “All my skin folk ain’t all my kin folk,” and the artist’s own
mantra, “We all we got,” are written in Korean, Urdu, German, French, Spanish, Polish,
and Bosnian on these humble posters. In the engravings displayed nearby, the two quotes
reappear alongside further social commentary and unknown names tangled within
baroque patterning. Where the signs are bright, outgoing, spontaneous, and fragile, the
intricate engravings on tar-colored sign substrate are dark, inward, laborious, and
relatively permanent. While the signs evoke grassroots advertising, the engravings evoke
dangerous and secret forms of expression, such as scratchings on trains and buses, in
bathroom stalls, or on desks at the back of a classroom. Executed during his residency at
the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (January 15–February 24, 2008), these textbased
works draw on familiar modes of communication encountered at stores or on the
street in order to capture contemporary voices.
To better record language that is alive, Genovese created this set of signs and engravings
in collaboration with visitors and staff at the MCA. Avoiding static dictionary definitions,
he enlisted native speakers at the museum to translate the phrases he ultimately painted
on neon posters. Likewise, the intricate engravings produced during this residency were
built up from messages carved by museumgoers. Because of his insistence on a human
element in his work, Genovese’s interaction with everyday life as art has a sincerity that
is lacking in the innovative contributions of Marcel Duchamp and Pop Art to this terrain.
While Duchamp appropriated ordinary objects, Genovese, informed by his prior career as
a specialty sign painter and sign contractor, creates his pieces with his own hands. While
Pop artists tended to aestheticize the vernacular, Genovese’s work is grounded more in a
collaborative process than in an aesthetic. Genovese effectively resurrects Josef Beuys’
conception of “social sculpture”—whereby social interaction is a work of art and every
person is an artist—without the utopian promise Beuys championed. Though his works
often involve painting, then, it is clear that Genovese’s medium is not strictly paint, nor is
it simply industrial sign materials; he also works with the abstract media of language and
human interaction.

CHICAGO ARTIST RISK UNVEILS A LOCALITY ART ATTRACTION IN UKRAINIAN VILLAGE

Risk Chicago - Slow Roll

CHICAGO ARTIST RISK UNVEILS A LOCALITY ART ATTRACTION IN UKRAINIAN VILLAGE

Chicago--Enjoy a night of neighborhood art, refreshments and Italian fare at Piccolo, 859 N. Damen at Iowa in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village. Artist Erik DeBat aka RISK will unveil a recent large-scale urban painting installation accompanied by some of his minimalist aerosol can sculptures.

The Saturday March 8th, reception of “Slow Roll” by RISK will be from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and is set to run through summer 2008. RISK will be updating the current work, which has been on display since the grand opening of Piccolo last summer, with newer paintings and photographs from his art catalog.

Piccolo is a streamlined walk-through neighborhood corner shop, and is the recent venture of Phil McFarland and Ty Fujimura, who are the brains behind the Chicago Lava Lounge and Small Bars. Piccolo specialties are the paninis, Italian subs, soups, salads, busschettas, and they are said to have some of the most flavorful gelatos in town.

Along with the clean design the open layout of Piccolo’s space, McFarland and Fujimura chose to invite local artist Erik DeBat aka RISK to create a site-specific art installation, throughout their large open shop with ample stretch of wall space.

RISK, the Chicago painter and designer began his career on Chicago’s rapid transit lines in the early 1980s, joining in the then underground sub-culture of graffiti art and hip-hop. RISK was among the first wave of talented Chicago urban artists to make their transition from the streets and begin to exhibit and sell their paintings in galleries.

Throughout the late 80s RISK began seriously working on commissions for interior designers and private collectors. He met and painted with the late pop artist Keith Haring in 1989, while working on a mural project in conjunction with Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Cultural Center’s then budding arts program Gallery 37.

In the 90s, RISK attended School Of the Art Institute Of Chicago where he studied graphic design, collage, photography and painting. Manufactured two street ware lines which he and partners exported to Japan and sold throughout the U.S., RISK continues to make his art, work on private commissions, and produce limited edition designs from his studio in Chicago’s North Lakeview.

Guest DJ’s will be spinning assortment of low-key rhythms, appetizers and refreshments will be served throughout the evening. For more info on Piccolo call 773-772-3355 or go to www.piccolochicago.com. For more info on artist Erik DeBat aka RISK contact him at riskone@earthlink.net or go to www.erikdebat.com.

Read a book!! Horribly Racist? or BET is Hilarious!

Editors Note: So I've shown this to a pretty wide range of people from many different mothers. By my count though my black friends find it funny for about 3 seconds then cry a little inside for what the world has come to and almost all end up in a "What the fuck is this?" My whurbanite friends think it's hilarious... I'm in the "Who was this made for?" camp... Confused as hell... Did BET expect kids to go home and start harrassing their parents to go to the library? Plus you're telling your audience that their breath smells and they need Speed Stick... Either way, thank you again BET for your best-selling brand of Blirony...
And to the good folks over at the Millenial Crier, I'd love to get your comment as I'm trying expand your whocabulary...

Four Chicago artists—Mike Genovese, Erik DeBat, Joe Compean, and Kingdom Kilpatrick—will
showcase their newest works at the innovative “The Insider Art Show” at 154 W. Hubbard
on April 26th through April 29th during the weekend celebration of Art Chicago 2007.

The art show will also celebrate the sneak-preview opening of 154 Lofts On West
Hubbard, a classic timber-beam loft conversion being developed by Foxford Development
and marketed exclusively by Jameson Realty Group in the River North neighborhood.

The Insider Art Show will take place at 154 West Hubbard, just footsteps from Art
Chicago, an international art fair taking place at the Merchandise Mart in conjunction
with ARTropolis.

The gala VIP preview for The Insider Art Show opens on Thursday April 26th from
6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will be sponsored and served by August Hill Winery. Hours
for other show dates are: Friday, April 27th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, April
28th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 29th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The artists have shown their work in professional galleries, public spaces, and
alternative art spaces, and are always on the lookout for exciting new ways and
environments to exhibit their art. “As an alternative art display space, The Insider
Art Show, fits this plan,” said DeBat.

At the opening night gala, August Hill Winery will display its private-label wines
and gift packages. Founded in 2002, August Hill Winery is owned by Sean Ginocchio
and Mark and Teri Wenzel, who all share a passion for producing and promulgating
handcrafted wines.

Located in Peru, Illinois on land that has been in the winemaker’s family since
the 1800s, the 3-acre vineyard and winery stands atop a bluff overlooking the Illinois
River Valley. www.augusthillwinery.com.
